University of the Potomac Announces Graduation Speaker for the Class of 2026

Dr. Robin Martin

Dr. Robin Martin serves as the President and CEO of Navigating Courage, bringing over two decades of experience guiding individuals and organizations across social impact investment and higher education. Her work centers on integrating diversity, equity, and inclusion into strategy and leadership development to drive transformative change.

Dr. Martin is recognized for her strategic acumen, skill in building systems, and ability to catalyze change. She has excelled in high-pressure roles — from the sidelines to executive boardrooms. Her distinguished career includes serving as the Deputy Director of Strategy, Planning, and Management at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, where she oversaw the operational and financial management of the Postsecondary Success team. She directed a $128 million strategic fund aimed at transforming colleges and universities nationwide, enhancing operational efficiency and alignment with the foundation’s mission.

During her tenure at the Gates Foundation, Dr. Martin led the division’s largest U.S. Program grant — a $15 million investment in Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to support COVID-19 diagnostic testing and technology, enabling campuses to reopen safely and serve their communities.

With more than 20 years of experience in higher education and philanthropy — including roles as Associate Provost at the University of Cincinnati, Director of Athletics, and tenure-track faculty member — Dr. Martin brings a rare ability to integrate strategy, leadership, and equity. Her expertise has transformed organizations and leaders across the globe.

Drawing from extensive research, Dr. Martin developed the Navigating Courage Framework, a groundbreaking approach to leadership created in response to growing demand for tools that help leaders and organizations act with courage and clarity.

Grounded in the African philosophy of Ubuntu — “I am because you are” — the framework is built on four principles: Be Human, Be in Community, Be Curious, and Be Courageous. Together, these values move teams from individualistic thinking toward collective success and lasting impact. The framework seeks to normalize courage at every level of organizations and communities.

Dr. Martin earned her Doctorate in Urban Education Leadership from the University of Cincinnati. In 2018, she authored Navigating Courage: Leading Beyond Fear, a collection of narratives and insights rooted in her experiences, research, and humanism. The book offers a powerful perspective on the challenges faced by women of color and underrepresented professionals — and practical strategies to overcome them.

With deep expertise and unwavering commitment to transformative leadership, Dr. Robin Martin continues to empower organizations and individuals to navigate complexity with courage, compassion, and purpose.
