This past week we saw the first pictures of Mars beamed back to us from an unmanned space vehicle. The world watched in awe as we saw the near perfect landing and the first images of the red planet. What an amazing technological feat. – something I was not sure was possible during my lifetime, especially when the US drastically cut back on its space program.
I recall as a young child watching the first American set foot on the moon. No one believed it possible, but America won that leg of the space race. Children of that time were enthralled with the concept of space travel and television shows such as Lost in Space and Buck Rogers became fashionable. Everyone wanted to be able to travel to the moon and there was a great sense of Patriotism that an American was the first to set foot on the lunar surface.
The mission to Mars was a more cooperative effort among nations, but there was the same cheering for NASA this week as there was for the Mars landing in the early sixties. (Although the staff looked a bit different than they did in the 60’s and 70’s -Did you see the Mohawk guy?)
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we all could work together to solve some of the world’s problems? If we have a common goal, we can work together to solve it. The problem is usually getting everyone to agree on the goal. Perhaps this amazing feat of cooperation and technology will stir some other parts of our society to work together. Who knows? There may just be another Buck Rogers out there somewhere. To infinity and beyond!
