Skilled Automotive Service Technicians are in high demand as vehicles become increasingly complex.  If you have experience in working with automobiles, light and heavy-duty trucks, all terrain, off road or other types of vehicles or with electrical, hydraulic, or other mechanical systems, at University of the Potomac, we can prepare you for a career with plenty of growth in this expanding field.

Learn to work on both foreign and domestic vehicles, servicing and repairing engines, transmissions, steering and suspension systems, brakes, heating and air conditioning systems, and electric components including computerized operations and high end electronics. Our online, self paced course will prepare students to take the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) national certification exam to become a Certified Automotive Technician. This valuable certification from ASE has been awarded to 300,000 repair and service professionals since the nonprofit organization recognized by all automotive manufacturers was founded in 1972. In order to sit for the exam, you’ll learn:

  • safety and foundation components of automotive technology
  • customer service and communication
  • engine mechanical testing, replacement, machining and assembly
  • automatic transmission fundamentals and hydraulic fundamentals
  • principles of manual transmissions
  • diagnosing and servicing steering and suspension systems
  • principles of breaking and breaking systems
  • principles of electrical and lighting systems
  • diagnosing and repairing heating and air conditioning
  • engine performance
  • diesel engine function and maintenance

You will have up to one year to complete the course, but you can work through it as quickly as you are comfortable, repeating any information as often as you wish to make sure that you have mastered it. Once you’ve finished, you’ll be ready to take and pass the certification exam and then gain a career focused position using your skills in a new career as a Certified Automotive Service Technician in a variety of settings, from NASCAR  and Indy racing shops to car dealerships, service centers and independent automotive shops.
