Optional Practical Training (OPT)
What is OPT?
Optional Practical Training (OPT) allows F-1 students to gain temporary employment experience in their field of study. You may apply for up to 12 months of OPT at each higher degree level (e.g., bachelor’s, master’s, doctor’s).
Types of OPT:
- Pre-completion OPT: Part-time work while school is in session or full-time during breaks.
- Post-completion OPT: Full-time work after completing your academic program.
Eligibility:
- Must be in F-1 status for at least one academic year.
- Employment must be directly related to your major.
Timelines:
- Apply up to 90 days before program completion
- No later than 60 days after program completion.

How to Apply:
- Contact your academic advisor (academic.advisor@potomac.edu) to ensure your program end date is correct.
- Complete the OPT Request Form
- Submit your application to USCIS with supporting documents.
Note: Once your DSO receives your OPT form, they will create your OPT I-20. You will receive the form within 3-5 business days.

- I-765 Form (Original) (If you apply online, the form is automatically generated in the system)
- OPT I-20 (Original)
- Visa / Passport / I-94 (Copies)
- Copy of your CPT I-20 (if applicable)
- 2 Passport Style Photos
