STEM OPT Extension

What is STEM OPT?
The STEM OPT Extension allows F-1 students who earned degrees in approved STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields to extend their Post-Completion OPT by 24 months.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Be on active 12-month Post-Completion OPT.
- Have earned a U.S. degree in a DHS-designated STEM field.
- Be employed by an E-Verify registered employer.
- Work must be at least 20 hours per week and directly related to your STEM degree.
Employer Responsibilities:
- Must complete and sign Form I-983 (Training Plan for STEM OPT).
- Participate in E-Verify.
- Adhere to reporting requirements throughout the extension.
Application Window:
- Apply up to 90 days before your Post-OPT ends.
- Application must be received by USCIS before the EAD expiration date.
