How to Find a Job

Getting your first job after college is not an easy process, especially if you do not have an established network of friends or contacts in your industry of choice. Sometimes it takes getting your foot in the door with the company you want to work for, before you get the job you really want. With hard work and perseverance, it is possible to get your first job and move your career forward.

Temporary Agencies

Starting your job search at a temporary agency can yield positive results. You may not get a salaried job right away, but you will gain experience that you can put on your resume. If you get a temporary position, and the position is a temp-to-hire role, it is possible to leverage the temporary job into a full-time gig. Being a temp gets you used to working in the professional world and allows you to build-up your contacts.

Job Boards

Public job boards are also a good source of employment leads and can help you land a full-time or part-time position. For instance, Craigslist has a variety of employment announcements listed on its site. Everything from part-time clerical work to openings for accountants are placed on sites like this. Apply with a cover letter and professional resume the same as you would for other job openings. Many careers have started through job board postings.

Career Services

Career services personnel at the University of the Potomac are also available to help. These professionals are experienced in career placement and can guide you in the right direction. From the preparation of your resume to interviewing tips, they are there to help you. Often-times employers come directly to campus to interview candidates for positions.
