The area around Tysons Corner is known for many things: a bustling commerce center that’s home to some of the world’s most prestigious companies; gigantic malls, exquisite shops and more stores than the great Carl Sagan could ever count; and let’s not forget the massive construction project that will soon qualify Tysons as the fourth largest planet in the solar system.
Hidden amongst this shining beacon of activity is a small Virginia college that has long served the area’s residents with career-based degrees in some of the region’s most employable fields. The school is University of the Potomac, and its Virginia college campus can be found right across from the Galleria, at 2070 Chain Bridge Road, in Vienna, Virginia. (For those traveling by Metro, it’s just a few short blocks from the new Galleria stop).
Potomac’s Virginia College Campus: Take a Seat
Chances are, if you’re from the area, you have driven by Potomac’s Virginia college campus many times. As it turns out, Potomac’s intimate campus is housed in a local landmark that residents affectionately call… (I’m not making this up)… The Toilet Bowl Building. That’s because the large oddly-shaped facade looks surprisingly like its nickname.
Ok, the official name is “Tycon Courthouse,” but that’s only on paper (the writing kind). Before Tycon, it was home to the Kodak Corporation, so it was originally built to look like a giant camera from the air. However, since most people pass by the building at ground level (as opposed to sailing through the sky), the façade looks much more like a toilet bowl, giving rise to endless schoolboy witticisms such as “Take a walk inside our building, and you’ll be flush with envy.”
But seriously, the region in and around this edifice of architectural humor boasts some serious clout. In addition to Potomac’s Virginia college campus, the area includes major technology players including Xerox, EDS, SAIC, Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, CSC and other. No wonder this region is oft-referred to as The Silicon Valley of the East Coast. In addition, the region boasts a number of major financial corporations such as TD Bank, Capital One, Bank of America, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Sun Trust and many more.
As you can see, the area is bursting with opportunity for people with the right kind of education. And that’s where Potomac’s Virginia campus excels. It gives working adults a convenient way to earn a fully-accredited college degree in some of the region’s most employable fields.
